Alright you think, vitamins are safe for you. Not always!
You have to know that certain vitamins may not be exactly what you need and actually may cause you more harm than good.
Here is some insight for you:
B9 vitamins are not all the same. Not everyone can metabolise folic acid, a synthetic form of B9, such as those with a gene polymorphism in a certain enzyme called MTHFR. When folic acid was introduced in foods to prevent neural tube defect in children from B9 deficient mothers they did not count on those who cannot use it!
Folinic acid is the active form of B9 and is found in green leafy vegetables. If you have this genetic defect you may not utilise folic acid from supplements and worse it will block the cell receptors for the active folate to kick in. Your blood test will show high levels of folate but it may well be folic acid, since the laboratories do not differentiate between both types. Supplements with folinic acid (not folic acid) and methyltetrahydrofolate are the ones to pick, but they are a tad more expensive, now you know why!
